1990_0301 : In The Acid
This was to become the first of two sides, of a single that I planned to propose to Maurice Engelen of Subway Records in Belgium. I did In The Acid one evening in March 1990, and then spent the next two months of weekends editing dialogue fragments and samples together on the Studer Dyaxis. This was the springboard for my promotion within music editing, as it was through this song that I got the practice necessary to do it all.
It came from my New Beat period, when all I wanted to accomplish in life was to secure a record deal that might place me somewhere in Belgium and give me a business excuse to move there and be with M.
For over a year I lived and breathed Acid House and New Beat out of the same compassion that led me to create, alternately, 3 mains. My desire to rejoin my love was so all-consuming that I began to devise hair-brained schemes that would give me a complete game-plan for records. I merely wanted to emulate the sounds coming from the Subway/Antler label.
“In The Acid” is a piece that metamorphosed at a time when Hard Beat, New Beat, and Hard House were a very big part of my life. I was considering going and living in Belgium at the time, and wrote these pieces as a way of paying my plane fare to get there.
The rather coarse nature of the samples is indicative of a music that was popular due to its imagery and rather overt drug references.
