1998 – 2012 : Day For Night Multimedia Client Portfolio

April of 1998 marks the start date of Eric Scott’s career as Creative Director with Day For Night Multimedia.

After a very productive “hiatus” of three months, re-invention and focusing priorities from his previous role as Art Director with WorldWest Communications, Eric moved all of his attention on developing a compact and flexible studio environment; one which required little or no overhead and minimal cost outlay. The first commercial pitch was a home run: to Touchstone Television/Imagine Entertainment/Disney Online, for the design of a web presence for “Felicity” resident advisor Noel Crane.

The objective was two-fold; to create a viral marketing and word-of-mouth piece for the show, and allow for there to be spirit of discovery and renewal for fans of the show, who would discover, by only the most casual of mentions, that fictitious Noel’s homepage really did exist online. Today, a commonplace enough occurrence, but a pretty radical idea, back in 1998, when only the elite seemed to understand web tools well enough to devise a minimalistic presence.

1991–2012 : Eric Scott : Label Art Direction | Day For Night

With instrumental, and especially textural electronic music, the primary relevance of music is clearest – namely, that music doesn’t really mean anything – it doesn’t need all sorts of lyrics and words and gimmicks in order to be successful.” Therefore, it feels appropriate that a non-narrative presentation format needed to be developed for Day For Night, to allow for individual die-cut panels, which could be viewed in any particular sequence within a given set of 10, just like random-shuffle programming on a CD player… Let’s face it, by 1991, there was no longer any real pacing of booklet content to digital audio listening.

In late 1991, Eric Scott – a disenfranchised young recording engineer and studio boffin – accepted a night-time design position with a local graphic design production house. In the mind of teaching himself vitally-needed Aldus Freehand skills, and experimenting with design and layout ideas, Eric worked diligently for a year, building out an as-yet non-existent art direction portfolio, between the hours of 10PM and 3AM every morning, before locking up the studio during the final shift of the night.

Eric’s earliest projects were to evolve into cover designs for his emerging Day For Night label. “I knew I had to do my own designs. There was simply no way I was going to trust anyone else to design the packaging for music I was ultimately responsible for, and had slaved so hard to produce. I knew – from the moment I’d figured out what it was about truly great graphic design that I was so passionate about – that I had to rise to this new challenge, and learn the skills necessary to produce my own visuals. They were, after all, and in my own mind, married to the music.”

By this time, Day For Night was already set for its first six releases, (Day 001through Day 006) – but as yet, had no album art or visual identity. The first attempts to focus in a single direction were chaotic – and thus began a passionate phase of investigation and research into the history of graphic design, and relevance for the aspiring young art director, whohad not attended art school, and lacked a proper design education. A process which went on for the next seven years, during which Eric had to align with a relevant methodology for representing visual ideas as album cover artin the digital age.

Although CD covers managed to preserve the square format of vinyl records, he still claims often to be put off by some design formats found in many artist’s CDs – the eco-friendly DigiPak® foldover design (was it merely a statement of disposability?) or just plain awkward (jewel case fold-outs that sequentially unfolded panels, attempting to reveal information in ways contrary to the message of the music).

Eric continues: “Album design had come to feel empty. If you really want to question the meaning – such as, ‘What am I meant to read into this, and in what order?’ then the pop CD packaging I saw around me was still attempting to guide reading in a linear manner, that did not relate to the non-linearity of the music. Ultimately, the electronica I was creating was a statement away from the more traditional “narrative” stance enforced by the previous school of design thinking, where elaborate, and often expensive design conceits – many of which were a bit too self-important – seemed almost as vacuous as dinosaur rock.

Ultimately, I’m a record-sleeve junkie. I grew up with sleeves and album art of the 70s and 80s, and slowly learned that, in the hands of capable designer, the better the art, the more memorable the album. There’s actually a great correlation I’ve found between the intuition I use when I browse music in shops, and the graphic tastes of the designers who do sleeves for the artists I like. For the art director or designer, great album design means that you should really tap into the minds of the kinds of fans who would buy such a record. There’s really an awful lot more to talk about there.”

Salvador Dalek

Keywords: Leftfield / Instrumental / Remix / Avant-rock / Multimedia

Salvador Dalek was born June 2001 as the collaborative project identity of multimedia musician/artist/designers Eric Scott and Pete Moraites, after meeting at a workshop with Tomato based in New York City. They have chosen this recording/remixing moniker as a channel for new creative and professional activities.

Not to be confused with Salvador’s wiser, older sibling, Julie Android, Dalek operates in a definitionless, sampladelic universe.

The first Salvador Dalek public event – was a performance LIVE JAM (Listen) in Venice, CA during the Pete Moraites DVD launch party in May 2006. The full event set list can be viewed here.

The latest was less than one month ago, at The Room in Santa Monica, CA where Eric Scott regularly DJ’s trip-hop, downtempo and surrealistically slurry beats on Thursday nights, as one of the guest DJs in a regular part of the Tripnotic Lounge series. Come by, buy a drink, relax and hear him spin – and definitely remember to stop by say hi!

2011_0825 : Luc Ferrari – (Hommage à) “Hörspiel / Chronopolis DUB” by Eric Scott / Day For Night

Luc Ferrari "HORSPIEL" Chronopolis Dub (Remix by Eric Scott)

Eric Scott Day For Night Luc Ferrari Remix on SoundCloud.com Luc Ferrari – (Hommage à) “Hörspiel / Chronopolis DUB” by Eric Scott / Day For Night by DayForNight

The setting of this work takes the listener, over seventeen minutes, along a journey – from the factory (the birthplace) to the stage (youth – through theatre, spectacle and illusion) via the countryside (peace, retirement) and concluding in a sanctuary. This HORSPIEL indirectly references the human condition, from birth to death. …HORSPIEL is a tribute as well to the late composer Luc Ferrari, who passed away in 2005 and who is greatly missed by all those who knew and loved his work.

A guide to the original Luc Ferrari sounds used in the piece are available from this link:

Extract From Composer’s Notes by Eric Scott

…Ferrari introduces his Tautologie; whereby a machinist’s saw signals a Caesarean birth as the “Usine” groove smashes in, punctuated by sharp attacks and pulsations, and presaging the Shakespearean (Stratford) montage of violent battle, with sword hits and exclamatory grunts. Le petit train (Strauss) then takes us out… and into an atmospheric segment, leading us to an adaptation of an original Salvador Dalek work – “Doop” – remixed from the original replacing all original percussion with recordings of Luc’s… The peacock screech, intended to represent the danger element in the work…

…The ambient textures from Chronopolis : Sons Tendus Électroniques forming a pulsating audio bed beneath this piece which integrates breakbeats and fretless bass. Nearing the fourteen-minute mark, more of those damned peacocks, and the bells of St. Antoine bid their farewell to us as our train leads us away once again, revealing the organ sounds from Chopin : Ambiance Église Orgue et Marteau… and carry us away again through time …And we are left with the image of receding sound of footsteps in the monastery…

2011_0621 : Eric Scott. “The Drowning Fish.” Day 033. cd / download

Eric Scott Day For Night Day 033 on SoundCloud.com Eric Scott “The Drowning Fish” Day 033. by DayForNight

The Drowning Fish” (Day 033) is a collection of contemplative-yet-upbeat pieces for electric guitar, with a shift of emphasis upon arrangements that “could be reproducible live”…This is not to suggest that Eric Scott has any performance dates planned for the near future; the composer/producer prefers the studio environment above all else.

I really do love to play live. But there’s a wiser instinct that reminds me that I just need to keep away from activities that have that laborious feeling, especially repetitive scheudules of any sort. From day to day, my attention is constantly moving, I’m restless and so I reinvent music every day. I’m just not into the side of things that requires that performer’s discipline. In many ways, it’s at the heart of why I do so many of the activities I pursue today.”

John Foxx & The Maths’ “Shatterproof” gets a “Broken” treatment here from Salvador Dalek’s Eric Scott – with a ghostly hint of Cabaret Voltaire, Pig Bag and Meat Beat Manifesto sprinkled into the post-industrial soup… Bigger beats and an aggressive bassline reminiscent of 80s Trevor Horn production… Not for the nostalgophobic, to say the least!

Eric Scott Day For Night Martin Solveig Dragonette on SoundCloud.com Martin Solveig feat. Dragonette “Hello” (Goodbye Remix by Eric Scott / Rhythm Factory) by DayForNight

Producing under the pseudonym Rhythm Factory, Eric Scott remixes Martin Solveig’s “Hello” (featuring vocals by Dragonette) into the “Goodbye Remix”

Heavy-but-fluid beats coupled with distorted sequencer lines, all adding up to a departure from the familiar pop original, and into progressive house territory.

Comprising eight bass-heavy, downtempo thumpers, King FM is about an instinct to preserve a chilled-out blend of clicks and cuts, vibing against low, smooth bass and rattling, exotic percussion lines.

About Day For Night : Music

Eric Scott is a composer/producer, artist, writer, DJ and sound designer, as well as the artistic and musical director of Day For Night, the boutique music label he founded in 1991.

Coming from a background in the advertising production industry where he established himself as a recording engineer and sound designer, Eric created Day For Night in 1991 as a boutique independent music label with an original catalogue of electronic, abstract, pop and avant-garde-jazz-classical music releases of his own. Solo recordings (under an absurdistly lengthy variety of pseudonyms, based more upon genre than personnel) include 3 Mains (1991), The Performing Man (1993), Paris – A Musical Overpass (1995), Found1 — A Stone (2006), The Inner Cinema (2007) and Junction – Another Train Leaving (2007).

Eric has also worked under the names Rhythm Factory, Bluebottles, Found, Mr. No-Logo, Künstfabriken, King FM and as one half of the duo Salvador Dalek (with collaborator Peter Moraites), all released on auteur label Day For Night. In 2011 alone, Eric has remixed a broad variety of artists in diverse styles, from Euro-Israeli pop chanteuse Keren Ann, John Foxx, David Lynch, Martin Solveig and musique concrète composer Luc Ferrari.

Internally, we have derived three general classifications of the original works we release on a curatorial basis, and in the electronica genre:

1) Electronica / Avant-Rock
Instrumental, experimental, leftfield and ambient work.

2) New Music / Modern Composition
Avant-garde, jazz-classical and modern composition for keyboards and/or ensemble players.

3) Songs and archival works
Indie pop and post-80s

Unfortunately we cannot accept unsolicited material from third parties. Please don’t send us any demos or similar offerings, thanks.

About Day For Night : Multimedia

Day For Night is a creative studio for multimedia, music and design. In 1991, coming from a background in the recording industry doing sound design and audio engineering, Eric Scott created Day For Night as a boutique independent music label, with an original catalogue of electronic and avant-garde jazz-classical music releases. Bluebottles

Bluebottles - aka Eric Scott of Day For Night

Keywords: Acid-Breakfast-jazz / Dance-Band / Comedy-Big Band

Bluebottles merge faux-jazz nostalgia and comedy to create a parody of a much-maligned genre.

Artistic director Eric Scott proclaims, “Jazz is part of everything that is Day For Night, but that’s a relative statement. Improvisation is at the root of almost all of my own composition. I’m by no means a formalist. There are moments when I put on someone else’s definition of jazz, and frankly, that can be absolute murder to sit through…That’s what Bluebottles is about; getting out a miniature Union Jack, putting on a carnation, doing that WW1-period crossword and spreading your legs to some light buffoonery over your eggs benedict and clotted cream. You won’t be disappointed.”

DAY FOR NIGHT NETRADIO
Now live, this is an excellent and diverse source of licensing inspiration, and only requires RealOne Player (free) before proceeding. Listen in now! »

WHEN DO I NEED A LICENSE?
You need a license if you are planning on using an original piece of music from our catalogue, as background for a secondary medium, such as film,televisioninternet/podcastinggaming, or other format of marketing or advertising, corporate or otherwise.

Otherwise, no license is needed, if you only plan to download and enjoy the music as the listener/end-user.

IS THIS ROYALTY-FREE MUSIC?
No, the music found at Day For Night is not royalty-free. It is bespoke music and original composition made by musical fine artists whose means of support and compensation is provided through royalties and fees from licensing.
WHAT KIND OF MEDIA DISTRIBUTION REQUIRES A MUSIC LICENSE?
This license involves recorded music used to accompany any form of broadcast or distribution that is intended for other users; ie, anything other than for personal use.

This includes, but is not limited to the following: advertising music (also known as commercial jingles), cinema (theatre) music, production music for corporate presentation and corporate videos, background music for radio spots, shows and announcements, feature film music used either incidentally, or as part of the soundtrack, music featured in the opening or closing title sequence of a film; music used in advertisement for film as part of a theatrical or online trailer; music used as part of a commercial or corporate DVD production; music for television, used in smart tags and targeted television advertising, music for games, internet-based background music for websites, and others.

DO PODCASTS REQUIRE A MUSIC LICENSE? ARE THESE TREATED THE SAME AS MP3 DOWNLOADS? Licensing of music for Podcasts are treated as though part-download (due to the MP3 format used) and part-broadcast (due to the syndicated RSS publication feed which syndicates via podcatching applications like iTunes).

Day For Night makes specialty licensing rates available, which are advantageous to the individual podcaster, and which are nominally only a little more than the price of a personal MP3 download, but cost less than radio distribution. The podcast license is both a legally-binding bridge between the content creator and the podcast producer. Distributing 3rd-party digital downloads of any copyright-controlled music, where the copyright holder is not the self, is otherwise illegal. DO I ALWAYS NEED TO CONTACT A MUSIC SUPERVISOR BEFORE OBTAINING A LICENSE? Not necessarily; however, a pair of synchronization documents will need to be produced upon request before manufacturing and distributing any music licensed from us. You will more than likely require a Master-Use confirmation and/or a Synchronization/Theatrical Performance Use Confirmation form, if the licensed music is for distribution (such as on DVD).

Please contact Day For Night directly with any such requests at this link, and we will be very happy to help you get started!

The Von Trapps

Keywords: Indie / Techno / Vocal / Melancholy

Presently hibernating, the Von Trapps is a one-off project created by producer/arranger/keyboardist Eric Scott with singer/lyricist Doug Green. Sporadic recordings made in the early 1990s foreshadowed ample breakbeat loops, and forsook electronic drum sounds for another ten years.

Rhythm Factory

Keywords: Electronica / Instrumental / Progressive House / Acid House / Progressive Ambient

Jupiter, Pete and Gez (they avoid using their surnames publicly) have a claim to fame in the development of obscure and unusual technologies, building equipment by hand that merges crude with state of the art and in sound research. Originally calling themselves Rhythm Defenders, this audio hobbyist trio maintain free-agent career status, which often finds them called in to solve audio-related mysteries in their spare time.

Some of their designs include the following:
1. A web-based sound cannon capable of emitting infrasound.
2. Anechoic “cones” of silence
3. Audio-reactive chambers fitted specially for the monitoring and recording of subject behavior, testing sound emissions (artifacts)
4. Hand-held accessories to facilitate recording, and that can be worn on the head or on the person of the recordist: “compact and lightweight.”
5. Reverb tanks and chambers.
6. Prepared pianos and other “modified” digital instruments.
7. Multi-platform / distributed “endless” loops and delay devices.
8. PDA-format Sonar

Remarkably, they look like brothers, but are unrelated, and are almost never seen in full headshot in publicity photos. They have since insisted upon retaining some element of anonymity.

Jupiter, or Jupe to his friends, studied contemporary composition at university in Southern California. Disenchanted in the 80s by the prospect of teaching a film-school driven student base, motivated purely by a need to conform to Hollywood interests, he left behind the prospects of becoming a full-time educator, and now moon-lights in a record store specializing in hard-to-find and archival recordings. Simultaneously responsible for cataloguing music and sound into the university radio station database, he has contributed heavily to the preservation of a musical heritage, by sharing an appreciation for history, above and beyond that of peers. He is well-versed in the recorded history of electronic musique-concrete from the western world, and presently telecommutes from Paris via a G4 titanium laptop.

Pete is a theme / jingle composer, with a technical background in record engineering and electronic composition; pursuits include a successful ringtone e-commerce site. Also a MIDI enthusiast and hobbyist, he has one of the largest private keyboard museums in the world, collecting and refurbishing archaic analog equipment, and maintaining a standard of usability for all sounds, “new and old.” He is recently married, with an infant daughter.

Gez works for French experimental sound lab, Dyslexip-Coflexip, pioneering infrasound and the research of its effects upon human and animal life. A follower of Vladimir Gavreau, he has pursued a secondary background in environmental field recording, amassing an impressive library of over 3500 DAT tapes, recorded first-hand during his global travel activities. “I just pack it all in a sack and just go places. I crawl under things, I wait, hit record… I close-miked a leopard in Peru who nearly killed me as I was trying to record the sound of her cub nursing…madness!”

Gez, a.k.a. “Beardy,” spent experimental years mixing LSD and infrasound, occasionally waking himself up to an 11 Hz tone in the morning, emitted by speaker cones under his mattress. “I’m slowly working my way down to 7 Hz,” he boasts, “I’m becoming impervious to the effects of sonic terrorism, one day at a time… Plus it keeps me regular.”

Rhythm Factory are currently working and telecommuting from a self-built studio loft and greenhouse in Paris, overlooking the Seine, near the Boulevard Des Grands Augustins.

Allegedly a pseudonym for composer / producer Eric Scott, a wholly dubious biography also emerged for Rhythm Factory in 1995, presenting claim to the name by a trio of audio subversives named Gez, Pete and Jupe, who solve audio-based mysteries.
