HerbAlpert_Music_03
Day For Night Multimedia announces the redesign of the official website of trumpeter, bandleader, producer and A&M Records co-founder Herb Alpert. As frontman for the legendary Tijuana Brass, Alpert rose up the charts during the 1960s with over 15 top-ten hits; many of their singles and albums pushing the Beatles out of the #1 spot. With business partner Jerry Moss, he created the legendary A&M Records; leading the Artist-as-Label-Owner movement in independent music.

Designed in joint association with Jim Kelley Design Group, this site represents three key dimensions of Herb Alpert, through his Music, visual Art – Alpert is an accomplished sculptor and painter – and life.

Andrew Lakey – Angel Magic 108 (book for Japan) – Art direction by Eric Scott (Day For Night)

Artist Andrew Lakey‘s following in Japan has been nothing short of fanatical since the early 1990s – and this miniature exhibition catalogue was produced before his Tokyo exhibition in December 2007, in association with JMA / Lightworks (Japan) and Crave Media Publishing (Japan).

“Angel Magic 108” is an oracle pairing original Lakey paintings with thematic virtues (Patience, Beauty, Tolerance…) and extends well beyond the angel artwork Lakey is best known for, spanning works from the last decade of Unencountered, Silhouettes and Shadows, Hearts and early abstract works.

The “Unencountered” (large paintings/tableaus) by artist Andy Lakey, a mini-site – Art Direction and Design by Eric Scott (Day For Night)

In late 1996, artist Andrew Lakey commenced an enormously prodigious painting cycle that continued (in its first phase at least) until November 1997, and which resulted in thousands of dazzlingly colorful works of art. In 2006, he resumed work on a new body of work – oversized tableaus inspired by these creations – “The Unencountered.”

What began as a methodological color study using nature icons has become an obsessive-compulsive journey into a vast and phantasmagoric world of enchanting and utterly original, new form factors of botanica and beings, detailed in sumptuous color and signature line work…

Sitework designed by Eric Scott (Day For Night)

Artist Andy Lakey’s extraordinary subjects in Brilliant Nature were derived using an improvisational process employing the unconscious, his memory and imagination. The sheer volume of subjects painted in this collection – including flowers of every type, exotic fish, mythical birds, idyllic animals, magical crickets, psychedelic snails and countless otherworldly flora and fauna – represent a whole taxonomy of an artist’s known and imagined world. Lakey does not simply sample his universe, he exhausts it completely.

Eric: “Intended originally as a reference site with artist’s monograph, I stopped updating this site in the late ’90s as I began to use Day For Night.com more formally  to share an increasing number of writings and works. Therefore it’s now a legacy site work which for me is kept special by the bizarre opening landing page which comes from the NIGHTlinkRail design experiments, complete with flashing strobes, paypoint machine and exhibition posters.”

Zebra Records’ artistic director Ricky Schultz commissioned a specialized “out of the box” approach to marketing his portfolio of A&R recruitment and jazz consultancy. The result: a tailored approach with customized rubberstamp, 3 inset postcards and Digipak®-style print package for a Portfolio/CV, hand-made in time for the year’s MIDEM conference in Cannes.

1994-1998 : Eric Scott Art Direction Portfolio

Immediately prior to launching a full-time career in 1998 as Creative Director with Day For Night, Eric Scott was Art Director with WorldWest Communications, and worked with recording industry clients Sony Music International and Zebra Records, to produce packaging design for some of their top artists.

In 1995, Sony Music International, in association with Toto‘s representation Fitzgerald-Hartley, issued a powerful comeback campaign directive for the band; the first result was “Tambu“… Inspired by the band’s fascination in invented word-hybrid… “Something which could mean something brand new unto itself,” a cross between “taboo” and the tamboe, an instrument played by percussionist Simon Phillips.

Tambu – the album – was a conceit born of a love for pulp-fiction covers and tawdry bedside reading. The album concept, devised by Eric Scott and Doug Brown (WorldWest Communications), involved a period juke joint setting, in which the band were to be filmed and photographed while performing, for both their album photography and music video “I Will Remember”… The design of the sleeve itself was a laborious affair, involving the creation of a custom typeface “5 4 0” (a distressed variation on Caslon) and many coffee-stained and soiled pages of a lyric booklet; representing the innards of the same pulp novel… This was to be followed in 1997 by a collection of the Toto’s archival “XX“.
