Eric Scott & The Everyday :: Listine [Day 056]

Bio :: Eric Scott

BIO Eric Scott is a composer, producer, artist, writer, DJ and sound designer from Santa Monica, California. He brings over 25 years’ consultative experience as principal and founder of Day For Night, a digital creative studio for art, design, music and video.

Coming from a background in the advertising production industry where he established himself as a sound designer and audio engineer, Eric broke out to work independently in 1991. A boutique independent music label, Day For Night boasts original catalogue of electronic, abstract, dream pop and avant-garde-jazz-classical music releases. Solo recordings (under an absurdistly lengthy variety of pseudonyms, based more upon genre than personnel) include 3 Mains (1991), The Performing Man (1993), Paris – A Musical Overpass (1995), Found1 – A Stone (2006), The Inner Cinema (2007) and Junction – Another Train Leaving (2007).

Eric has also worked under the names Rhythm Factory, Bluebottles, Found, Mr. No-Logo, Künstfabriken, King FM and as one half of the duo Salvador Dalek, all released on auteur label Day For Night. In 2011 alone, Eric has remixed a broad variety of artists in diverse styles, from Euro-Israeli pop chanteuse Keren Ann, John Foxx, David Lynch, Martin Solveig and musique concrète composer Luc Ferrari.

In 1998, Eric established Day For Night Digital Creative Studio, mixing in his creative strengths through professional consultative services, and comprehensive design solutions. His studio activities encompass, full-time, his lifelong passion for creativity in communication and the visual arts as well as music.

Today, Day For Night provides bespoke strategic solutions, consultation and development in web properties and viral multimedia, branding and identity design, and original music production and underscore for film. His client list includes TalkAboutIt.org, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, musician-artist Herb Alpert, Disney Online / Buena Vista Internet Group, Touchstone Television, actor-producer Michael Chiklis, sound artist Scanner (Robin Rimbaud), The Epilepsy Foundation of America, University of California Irvine, contemporary visual artist Andrew Lakey, INVIDI Technologies, Two Chefs On A Roll, the Crestone Group Baking Companies, the Swim~ label and many others.

Eric is a graduate of the University of Southern California (USC) Marshall School of Business, with a certificate from the Entrepreneur Program.

King FM (Eric Scott/Day For Night). “Soundsystem 0.0.2.” Day 086.cd / download

With “Soundsystem 0.0.2” (Day 086) digital dub-plate fanatic King FM deconstructs the sound work begun by Rhythm Factory and other Day For Night artists in this light and summery outing. Comprising eight bass-heavy, downtempo thumpers, King FM is about an instinct to preserve a chilled-out blend of clicks and cuts, vibing against low, smooth bass and rattling, exotic percussion lines.

Salvador Dalek :: Seaside Weekend [Day 085]

Mix | Streaming Playlist

Salvador Dalek’s “Seaside Weekend” (Day 085) is where downtempo beats meet beachside bingo.

Mixed by Eric Scott, this set melds progressive house and dancefloor-oriented grooves from the Day For Night artist roster, also featuring Rhythm Factory, … and even Bluebottles… resulting in a blend of hauntological pastiche.

Eric Scott & The Everyday :: Vigilant [Day 046]

CD | Download

“Vigilant” (Day 046) presents eleven tracks by Eric Scott, leading with the Britpop-tinged “My Nature”, and merging smoky trip hop, brooding melodies and dark keyboard layers, with the occasional upbeat diversion.

Eric Scott & The Everyday :: A Priori [Day 043]

CD | Download

“A Priori” (Day 043) collects ten tracks by Eric Scott, merging smoky trip hop, brooding melodies and dark keyboard layers, with the occasional upbeat diversion. “I wrote much of this in the early half of 1997. At that time, I was experiencing some turmoil, and documented almost everything in audio journals, and in the form of my guitar playing, which became very diligent, and very structured all of a sudden.

“Then, the project went on hold, as I began to deal with many of the feelings that came up during the writing process. The feelings were so intense that I never revisited the songs for almost ten years. It was like a magnet, finding so much power within this creative block, and so I considered it a great honor to finish and record all ten tracks!”

Eric Scott :: _Underscore [Day 041]

CD | Download

041_02

“_Underscore” (Day 041) is the latest installment in orchestral cinematica from composer Eric Scott. Accentuated by patterned, rhythmical cycles, string lines, and Eric’s insistent post-minimalist trademark frenzy, this collection forges an emotional landscape that is rife with tension, in equal parts as it is harmonious with compassion, love and peace. “Underscore” is a lexicon of personal derives and new music for films; a work that is created anticipating need as filmic vantage.

Found6 :: What Part Of Us [Day 068]

CD | Download

“Found5: What Part Of Us” (Day 068) takes the listener along a flowing atmospheric journey, leading through places and realms unknown…This ‘Found’ collection relies upon the sounds of our aqueous pursuits… An underwater experience for the weary traveler.

Eric Scott & The Everyday :: Tensmith [Day 036]

CD | Download

A collection of acoustic demos, recorded between July 2009 and December 2010, and encompassing the entire songwriting catalogue by Eric Scott, for Day For Night/Editions La Nuit Américaine.

Eric: “In a way, this project represents a kind of re-invention; where the freedom of hearing oneself re-interpreted, as many as 20 years later, through an acoustic demo, frees one of the trappings of fashion, style, temperament, and leaves only the bare bones of a rather positive songwriting legacy in place. It was made with the intention of leaving an inspirational footprint, and I think it wholly succeeds.”

Eric Scott & The Everyday :: The Drowning Fish [Day 033]

CD | Download

“The Drowning Fish” (Day 033) is a collection of contemplative-yet-upbeat pieces for electric guitar, with a shift of emphasis upon arrangements that “could be reproducible live”…This is not to suggest that Eric Scott has any performance dates planned for the near future; the composer/producer prefers the studio environment above all else.

“I really do love to play live. But there’s a wiser instinct that reminds me that I just need to keep away from activities that have that laborious feeling, especially repetitive scheudules of any sort. From day to day, my attention is constantly moving, I’m restless and so I reinvent music every day. I’m just not into the side of things that requires that performer’s discipline. In many ways, it’s at the heart of why I do so many of the activities I pursue today.”

Day For Night :: Identity [Day 008]

Book | Words & Images by Eric Scott

day008_tabletop_mini

Eric Scott is a writer, multimedia artist, designer and composer… and in his 2nd book “Identity,” (Day 008) he explores the gestalt of Day For Night, presenting a variety of visual identities (alternating between the personal, and those created for his clients) along with other “messaging” from the Day For Night history. To create this work, Eric has painstakingly reviewed, documented and organized his own personal work, writings, designs & creative observations to present a cross-section that is the salient tip of the Day For Night (creative) iceberg…

In keeping with this approach, an abstract, occasionally surrealist, and mostly art-focused approach dominates the works presented, where “Identity” deliberately avoids the conflict of narrative, and instead interweaves many of Eric’s personal writings, notebooks and archives. A corner peeked-around when developing the identities and writings in a highly personal and visual setting… all of which, at its heart, defines the Day For Night approach.

“Identity” is a must-read for anyone who is a friend of the label, a client (or potential client), a lover of railway travel and/or urban explorer, reader of poetry or theorist of information architecture, or someone who is passionate about the creative process.

The full visual identity system, logo and sub-brands created by Day For Night, under the catalogue ID “Identity” (Day 008). As a matter of internal reference, this also includes identity marks for Eric ScottNIGHTfonts, Editions La Nuit Amèricaine, Re:Fresh, King FMBluebottles, and Rhythm Factory, plus the accompanying letterhead, envelope, business card, in-ternal communications (fax, invoice, etc.), and a free downloadable desktop utility for composers, the Day For Night BPM Calculator

We met the challenge of creating an imaginary world of underground train journeys and “tube” subway station platforms. These were wedded to the actor performances (who were filmed on blue-screen), in order to create a virtual journey from “ignorance to awareness” for the website, which is structured around original video PSAs.

Luc Ferrari Remix “Hörspiel” [Day 082]

Chronopolis Dub Remix by Eric Scott / Download

Hommage à Luc Ferrari - Chronopolis D•U•B by Eric Scott (Day For Night)
Hommage à Luc Ferrari – Chronopolis D•U•B by Eric Scott (Day For Night)

The setting of this work takes the listener, over seventeen minutes, along a journey – from the factory (the birthplace) to the stage (youth – through theatre, spectacle and illusion) via the countryside (peace, retirement) and concluding in a sanctuary. This HORSPIEL indirectly references the human condition, from birth to death. …HORSPIEL is a tribute as well to the late composer Luc Ferrari, who passed away in 2005 and who is greatly missed by all those who knew and loved his work.

A guide to the original Luc Ferrari sounds used in the piece are available from this link:

Extract From Composer’s Notes by Eric Scott

…Ferrari introduces his Tautologie; whereby a machinist’s saw signals a Caesarean birth as the “Usine” groove smashes in, punctuated by sharp attacks and pulsations, and presaging the Shakespearean (Stratford) montage of violent battle, with sword hits and exclamatory grunts. Le petit train (Strauss) then takes us out… and into an atmospheric segment, leading us to an adaptation of an original Salvador Dalek work – “Doop” – remixed from the original replacing all original percussion with recordings of Luc’s… The peacock screech, intended to represent the danger element in the work…

…The ambient textures from Chronopolis : Sons Tendus Électroniques forming a pulsating audio bed beneath this piece which integrates breakbeats and fretless bass. Nearing the fourteen-minute mark, more of those damned peacocks, and the bells of St. Antoine bid their farewell to us as our train leads us away once again, revealing the organ sounds from Chopin : Ambiance Église Orgue et Marteau… and carry us away again through time …And we are left with the image of receding sound of footsteps in the monastery…

John Foxx & The Maths’ “Shatterproof” gets a “Broken” treatment here from Salvador Dalek’s Eric Scott – with hints of Cabaret Voltaire, Pig Bag and Meat Beat Manifesto sprinkled into the post-industrial soup… Bigger beats and an aggressive bassline reminiscent of 80s Trevor Horn production… Not for the nostalgophobic, to say the least!

The process of capturing the mere tracing of a shadow cast by a profile, or the simple outline of a body part, such as a hand or a torso or a foot, as a methodology to eliminate extraneous detail, becomes a portal into a new dimension of artifact. The question is “How much can be removed before likeness is lost or new likeness is revealed?”

The Silhouettes & Shadows collection is a continuum of work that will be shown to the public in upcoming exhibitions and at select venues where the artist is making a public demonstration of the process.

The Von Trapps

Genres: Indie / Electro / Breakbeat Techno / Vocal

Presently hibernating, the Von Trapps is a one-off project created by producer / arranger / keyboardist Eric Scott with singer / lyricist Doug Green. Sporadic recordings made in the early 1990s foreshadowed ample breakbeat loops, forsaking “electronic drum” sounds for another ten years…

Peter Moraites – sketch by Patricia Dalen

Genres: Experimental / Cinematica / Illustration / Fiction / Design / Motion Graphics / Direction / Consultation

Pete Moraites began drawing pictures at the very early age of 0.9 years old, initially favoring the medium of crayon (Crayola 64-pack with built-in sharpener). Showing some promise in this area, he expanded his repertoire to include pencils, pens and even Mr. Sketch scented magic markers (Peter was easily identified at the time by his perennial polychrome mustache). It was around this time that he began to write stories as well.

Peter went to Rutgers University where he continued to write and draw things. Somewhere between the two, people began to pay him for it. Past creative endeavors include:

  • Active participation in the Tomato ten-day workshops in Tokyo (2000), and the five-day workshop in New York City (2001).
  • Developing motion graphics and writing/directing entertainment segments for liins, John Gray, Richard Jeni, Norman Schwarzkopf, and Larry King
  • Writing, directing and editing promotional, documentary and music videos for Ecko Clothing
  • Designing motion interstitials for Nickelodeon™ and writing/illustrating a serialised comic book for Nick Online™
  • Developing opening titles and interstitial designs for PBS’s “New York Adventures” Peter’s cartoon work has also been featured in Backyard Monsters, a touring museum exhibit for children.

During 2001, Peter (a.k.a. Sean Annigans, a.k.a. “The White Knight of Roppongi”) migrated to the Left Coast where he continues to grow as a creator/developer of ideas, imagery, and story, frequently combining his skill and passion for conceptualization, writing, design, direction, editing, and animation. Recently, he has begun making noise as well, with increasingly occasional musical result. His collaboration with Eric Scott, under the moniker Salvador Dalek, remains one of the many unsolved mysteries of this century.

Bluebottles :: Bluebottles [Day 087]

“Bluebottles” (Day 087) merges faux-nostalgia, breakfast-jazz and anemic (I think he means ‘anthemic’ – Ed.) 1930’s dance-band jingleism, to create a parody of a much maligned genre. Musical director Eric Scott proclaims “Jazz is part of much that is Day For Night… but that’s a relative statement.

Bluebottles - aka Eric Scott of Day For Night

“Improvisation is at the root of almost all of my own composition. I’m by no means a formalist. There are moments when I put on someone else’s definition of jazz, and frankly, that can be absolute murder to sit through. So somewhere toeing that line, there lives a peculiar but friendly hybrid of big-band, comedy-fusion and acid-breakfast jazz. That’s what Bluebottles is about; getting out a miniature Union Jack, putting on a carnation, doing that WW1-period crossword and spreading your legs to some light buffoonery over your eggs benedict and clotted cream. You won’t be disappointed.”
