Luc Ferrari Remix “Hörspiel” [Day 082]

Chronopolis Dub Remix by Eric Scott / Download

Hommage à Luc Ferrari - Chronopolis D•U•B by Eric Scott (Day For Night)
Hommage à Luc Ferrari – Chronopolis D•U•B by Eric Scott (Day For Night)

The setting of this work takes the listener, over seventeen minutes, along a journey – from the factory (the birthplace) to the stage (youth – through theatre, spectacle and illusion) via the countryside (peace, retirement) and concluding in a sanctuary. This HORSPIEL indirectly references the human condition, from birth to death. …HORSPIEL is a tribute as well to the late composer Luc Ferrari, who passed away in 2005 and who is greatly missed by all those who knew and loved his work.

A guide to the original Luc Ferrari sounds used in the piece are available from this link:

Extract From Composer’s Notes by Eric Scott

…Ferrari introduces his Tautologie; whereby a machinist’s saw signals a Caesarean birth as the “Usine” groove smashes in, punctuated by sharp attacks and pulsations, and presaging the Shakespearean (Stratford) montage of violent battle, with sword hits and exclamatory grunts. Le petit train (Strauss) then takes us out… and into an atmospheric segment, leading us to an adaptation of an original Salvador Dalek work – “Doop” – remixed from the original replacing all original percussion with recordings of Luc’s… The peacock screech, intended to represent the danger element in the work…

…The ambient textures from Chronopolis : Sons Tendus Électroniques forming a pulsating audio bed beneath this piece which integrates breakbeats and fretless bass. Nearing the fourteen-minute mark, more of those damned peacocks, and the bells of St. Antoine bid their farewell to us as our train leads us away once again, revealing the organ sounds from Chopin : Ambiance Église Orgue et Marteau… and carry us away again through time …And we are left with the image of receding sound of footsteps in the monastery…

John Foxx & The Maths Remix “Shatterproof” [Day 082]

“Broken Mix” by Salvador Dalek (Eric Scott) / Download

John Foxx And The Maths "Shatterproof (Broken Mix)" - Remix by Salvador Dalek (Eric Scott / Day For Night)
John Foxx And The Maths “Shatterproof (Broken Mix)” – Remix by Salvador Dalek (Eric Scott / Day For Night)

John Foxx & The Maths’ “Shatterproof” gets a “Broken” treatment here from Salvador Dalek’s Eric Scott – with hints of Cabaret Voltaire, Pig Bag and Meat Beat Manifesto sprinkled into the post-industrial soup… Bigger beats and an aggressive bassline reminiscent of 80s Trevor Horn production… Not for the nostalgophobic, to say the least!

“The White Knight of Roppongi”

Peter Moraites – sketch by Patricia Dalen

Genres: Experimental / Cinematica / Illustration / Fiction / Design / Motion Graphics / Direction / Consultation

Pete Moraites began drawing pictures at the very early age of 0.9 years old, initially favoring the medium of crayon (Crayola 64-pack with built-in sharpener). Showing some promise in this area, he expanded his repertoire to include pencils, pens and even Mr. Sketch scented magic markers (Peter was easily identified at the time by his perennial polychrome mustache). It was around this time that he began to write stories as well.

Peter went to Rutgers University where he continued to write and draw things. Somewhere between the two, people began to pay him for it. Past creative endeavors include:

  • Active participation in the Tomato ten-day workshops in Tokyo (2000), and the five-day workshop in New York City (2001).
  • Developing motion graphics and writing/directing entertainment segments for liins, John Gray, Richard Jeni, Norman Schwarzkopf, and Larry King
  • Writing, directing and editing promotional, documentary and music videos for Ecko Clothing
  • Designing motion interstitials for Nickelodeon™ and writing/illustrating a serialised comic book for Nick Online™
  • Developing opening titles and interstitial designs for PBS’s “New York Adventures” Peter’s cartoon work has also been featured in Backyard Monsters, a touring museum exhibit for children.

During 2001, Peter (a.k.a. Sean Annigans, a.k.a. “The White Knight of Roppongi”) migrated to the Left Coast where he continues to grow as a creator/developer of ideas, imagery, and story, frequently combining his skill and passion for conceptualization, writing, design, direction, editing, and animation. Recently, he has begun making noise as well, with increasingly occasional musical result. His collaboration with Eric Scott, under the moniker Salvador Dalek, remains one of the many unsolved mysteries of this century.

Salvador Dalek :: Birth [Day 035]

CD | Download

Salvador Dalek “Birth.” Day 035 by Salvador Dalek

“Birth” (Day 035) is the nascent studio outing of ambient and progressive cinematica artists Salvador Dalek. Not to be confused with its wiser, elder sibling Julie Android, Salvador Dalek operates in a sampladelic and definitionless universe.

Born June 2001 as a live remix identity of Eric Scott and Peter Moraites, this moniker is the one they have used since their first association, through the collaborative projects they have created following Tomato Workshops NYC, where they first chose recording and remixing as an outlet away from other professional activities in the fields of multimedia.

Salvador Dalek “Spelling Test Video Party"

DVD Launch Event

The evening of Saturday, May 20, 2006 marked the date for the Peter Moraites “Spelling Test” video album Launch Party, at Ocean Front Gallery, along the legendary henna-tatooed, roller-blading boardwalk in Venice, CA. Many thanks are due all-around to the friends who so kindly attended and contributed to the evening’s success.

After sundown, the courtyard space at 801 Ocean Front Walk rapidly became a buzzing outdoor lounge, complete with wine and appetizers, and illuminated by a pair of projection walls (one outdoor, the other inside the gallery) – and featuring a continual and mesmerising litany of classic music videos and intoxicating visuals throughout the night.

Inside the main gallery space, a hushed audience was treated to a soulful, pop acoustic set by Canadian artist Marianne Baker, after which came the anticipated, and warmly received screening of the video album/DVD “Spelling Test,” which comprises nine original Pete Moraites music/art videos, with soundtracks by Moraites (“Simpletongue”, “Twitterpation”, “Smokercraft”) and Salvador Dalek (Day For Night’s Eric Scott, remixing and collaborating with Moraites). The presentation was transformed by Moraites’ own closing speech; a poignant thanks to his closest collaborators – an inspirational hommage to the value of encouragement and the creative workshop process.

Eleven o’clock heralded the premiere live performance of Salvador Dalek (Eric Scott on laptop and mixing desk, with Pete Moraites providing visuals and live VJ-accompaniment throughout the set) – unleashing a storming set of progressive house, trance, and drum’n’bass remixes from the Day For Night back catalogue, spanning a breakneck-56-song live remix (in under an hour’s time) and highlighted by a glowing flute performance from soloist Kelly Wilson, during “Twitterpation” – another key highlight of the evening. Our ears are still ringing, and all in a good way.

The Salvador Dalek remix CD “Beat The Time (Day 055)” will be released soon, featuring highlights from this live set, plus a fully-remixed podcast of the set to also follow soon… Check back at this link for details very soon:

An excerpt from Pete Moraites.com: “This piece began with my long time fascination with sign language and led me to begin learning ASL.

“The intention was to make poetry with hands, by exploring the ideas of hypnotic poetry or poetic hypnosis, and by using the hands as fluid dancing forms… in those bits the poetry of hands resembles ASL like ee cummings poetry resembles a dictionary… they use the same forms and structures.”

Take a journey with suspended expectations and definitions.

Vistas, both new and familiar, take on magical properties. Cosmic forces play their game of balance on a black and white game grid. A magician’s music reveals older worlds within the walls of the labyrinth. Giant roadside faith magnet shatters, releasing dynamic expressions of energetic creation.

This is how we see the world in a new light.

Tomato Workshops NYC :: June 2001

Art Workshop Event

John Warwicker (Tomato) at the NYC Tomato workshops

John Warwicker (Tomato) at the NYC Tomato workshops

“Record the world in front of you
and in the edges of what you
cannot or will not see.” – Eric Scott

Excerpt from the brief for Tomato‘s workshops:

The workshops are a way of immersing yourself suddenly and intensely into the process and conversation that goes on within tomato. Several members of tomato are there to initiate the conversation, but the workshop really happens through the interaction of everyone there. A wide range of people from around the world with diverse backgrounds come together to create work. You not only learn a great deal from everyone around you but everyone learns from you as well. They are about creativity, art, process, life, philosophy, design, and the interconnectedness of all of these things. But of course I now have to ask if these things ever were separate from each other anyway? (more) (Courtesy of TomatoWorkshops.com)

Eric Scott (Day For Night) “June, 2001 in New York City was the setting of the Tomato Workshops where I met Peter Moraites, and formed an indelible bond and friendship. Much can be said about the 5 days spent at a workshop where I arrived with no concrete expectations, and left with a head full of dreams. John Warwicker, Graham Wood and Steve Baker (of Tomato) had created a studio setting that felt (for me) like a week-long break from routine, where the client work schedule got left behind in California, and I could instead inhabit this “commune-like” environment for creativity, where sleeping and eating came second to working and making things in a creatively charged space.”

Eric Scott “Polite” from Tomato Workshops NY, 2001 from Day For Night.

Produced for Day 1 of the Tomato Workshops NYC, June 2001.
An exercise created from my room at Hotel 17, Greenwich Village at 11:30 pm on a very rainy night in New York City. It was made using Flash and Macromedia SoundEdit; using a digital camera, handheld audio recorder and limited resources (certainly no access to internet, c’mon — it was June 2001 and I was alone in a dingy little hotel)… 🙂
