Day For Night “Identity” (Day 008)

Book / Words & Images by Eric Scott

day008_tabletop_mini
Eric Scott is a writer, multimedia artist, designer and composer… and in his 2nd book “Identity,” (Day 008) he explores the gestalt of Day For Night, presenting a variety of visual identities (alternating between the personal, and those created for his clients) along with other “messaging” from the Day For Night history. To create this work, Eric has painstakingly reviewed, documented and organized his own personal work, writings, designs & creative observations to present a cross-section that is the salient tip of the Day For Night (creative) iceberg…

In keeping with this approach, an abstract, occasionally surrealist, and mostly art-focused approach dominates the works presented, where “Identity” deliberately avoids the conflict of narrative, and instead interweaves many of Eric’s personal writings, notebooks and archives. A corner peeked-around when developing the identities and writings in a highly personal and visual setting… all of which, at its heart, defines the Day For Night approach.

“Identity” is a must-read for anyone who is a friend of the label, a client (or potential client), a lover of railway travel and/or urban explorer, reader of poetry or theorist of information architecture, or someone who is passionate about the creative process.

The full visual identity system, logo and sub-brands created by Day For Night, under the catalogue ID “Identity” (Day 008). As a matter of internal reference, this also includes identity marks for Eric ScottNIGHTfonts, Editions La Nuit Amèricaine, Re:Fresh, King FMBluebottles, and Rhythm Factory, plus the accompanying letterhead, envelope, business card, in-ternal communications (fax, invoice, etc.), and a free downloadable desktop utility for composers, the Day For Night BPM Calculator.

Sitework: “The Re:Fresh Gallery”

Day 060, the Re:Fresh Gallery, is a three-part virtual structure proposed for the viewing of graphic artworks by Day For Night, and set to the downtempo/trip-hop beats spun by DJ Salvador Dalek. Re:Fresh is a home to works and installations in the areas of fiction and non-fiction, audio, motion and interface design, and is accompanied by a catalogue documenting the graphic work of Eric Scott.

The current exhibition, “Fans Should Not Be Moved Or Turned Off” collects visual work from the graphic archives of Eric Scott, to be viewed in the upper design gallery. Other site spaces include the Listen Soundspace, workshops for audio design, poetry and intermedia, and a lending library for customized industrial samples and loops.

Eric Scott “Addictions” (Day 030)

Book (Words: Eric Scott) + CD

In Day 030 “Addictions” first two volumes, “Simple words,” “Hazy memories,” Eric Scott joins verse and graphic images. Printed in 4.75″ square format, this very-limited release is housed in a double-cd jewel case, accompanied by a hand-picked selection of finished songs and recordings, most of which were the by-product of these writings from the late 1980s and early 90s.

The accompanying disc contains a mixture of love songs and tone poems, this collection may on the surface appear to be a more conventional set; recorded in a style less familiar to fans of his more recent work; these humble arrangements of one-man band on piano, guitar, and bass do not belie their insistence as an important chapter in Eric’s work as singer-songwriter.

“Angel Magic 108” is an oracle pairing original Lakey paintings with thematic virtues (Patience, Beauty, Tolerance…) and extends well beyond the angel artwork Lakey is best known for, spanning works from the last decade of Unencountered, Silhouettes and Shadows, Hearts and early abstract works.

NoelCrane.com – Flash edition (2000) and follow up to the successful mini-site created during the show’s first season. Digital Strategy, Art Direction and Design by Eric Scott (Day For Night).

Noel Crane has asked us to host his popular Flash site for him, and we are honored to have him on board. Cut. Ok, now, back to reality.

The personal homepage of Noel Crane, graphic designer, friend to Felicity Porter, and resident advisor at Kelvin Hall and all-around nice guy, was launched prior to his creation of Blumberg-Crane Design with business partner Sean. But an entire level of digital strategy preceded this site, when Day For Night helped to visualize a universe in which Noel, a fictitious character on the WB Network’s television show Felicity (created by J.J. Abrams and Matt Reeves), would come to life online as a character with a real life, real website, real feelings… you get the picture.

Two Chefs/Bakkavor (aka Two Chefs On A Roll) official site for the savory and sweet product lines they create with innovation and a truly passionate love for creativity – Art Direction, design and programming by Eric Scott (Day For Night)

Since 1985, Two Chefs/Bakkavor (Two Chefs On A Roll) has risen from a small, wholesale dessert company to a full range manufacturer of custom and private label savory and bakery products. Taking great pride in developing true partners, Two Chefs work to design and manufacture culinary products that deliver and satisfy individual customer needs. Each and every activity within the company contributes and provides “peace-of-mind” for the true partners, resulting in the finest customer experiences.

The digital strategy was initiated through meetings with original founders Lori Daniel and Eliot Swartz, who wanted most to convey the uniqueness of the creative and work-experience at their company, which routinely pioneered in the kitchen as well as in the boardroom.

For “Manifesto” (Day 017) Day For Night rethink sub-urban planning, in a typographic journal and overview of Day For Night. Post-Situationist propaganda films covers the walls of NIGHTlinkRail, hammering on about the overthrow of cultural leadership and the entertainment channels that fuel “big news.”

Post-revolution theories abound; albeit tongue-in-cheek, while “Big ideas” cross pollinate with more Situationism to create a collection that is naturally an ongoing work-in-progress.

Got happiness?
